Adding personality to your home
Your home is your canvas, meaning it can be decorated however you want. Why not take the opportunity to add a splash a bit of personality into it with some bold, bright colours? In this blog we will discuss some things to consider before opting for vibrant colours.
Before committing to a colour, you should consider whether it is going to match the rest of the room. Take into consideration aspects that aren’t as easy to remove, for example the flooring, is it tiles or wood? Questions to ask yourself before settling for a bright colour could be “Will this colour make the room look darker when I want it to look lighter?” “How will this colour complement the existing theme and décor?” and the most important question, “How does light affect the colour?”
Light, this includes natural light and artificial light, can drastically change the perception of a colour. Depending on the type of light, it can make your chosen colour look more vibrant than intended or it can completely dull it down. To ensure that this is avoided, it is best to get a sample of the colour you want and test it under both natural and artificial light. This can be done by painting a little swatch of it on a door that is directly in the natural light. Do the same on one that isn’t in natural light so you can see how artificial light affects the colour. This is the best overall approach no matter where you want to put a bright colour, ensuring it is in both natural and artificial light.
If you are considering using vibrant colours for your cupboard doors, the best way to make them stand out is to put them alongside a neutral tone such as a grey. By doing this, it will ensure that the colour will pop. Vibrant colours on cupboards are a lot easier to complement than people think, you should just be concerned about whether they wash the room out or make it look darker. This can be easily prevented as if you use a slightly dark tone for the rest of the room, use a bright vibrant tone for the cupboards and vice-versa. If your room colour is light, use a darker, vibrant colour for the cupboards. This helps to ensure there is some balance within the room.
Another thing to consider before opting for vibrant colours is will the cupboard doors be the focal point of the room or a subtle accent? If you would like your doors to be the focal point of the room, vibrant colours would be your best option. If don’t want the cupboard doors to be the rooms’ focal point, vibrant colours might not be your best option.
